Growing up MAD Magazine was my window into a range of serious subjects from politics to pop culture to international issues. When asked if there’s a specific comic strip that holds a personal meaning for him Nate reflected on how much of his work is a reflection of his own experiences. A lot of my comics touch on things I relate to coffee technology and relationships they’re themes I can easily connect with he explained. “Each of them somehow circles back to my own life, which makes them more meaningful for me to create.
While Nate finds a personal connection with many of his strips, he admits that some of his favorites are the ones that rely purely on visual humor, with no words involved. I enjoy the challenge of creating a comic that’s just a funny image, with no dialogue. Those are the ones I feel most accomplished about because they’re harder to pull off. If I manage to get it just right it’s a rewarding feeling. He laughed, adding, Thought, as I get older the pats on the back have turned more into pats on the shoulders. Ultimately, for Nate, each comic he creates is a reflection of his own humor and life observations with some favorites standing out due to their simplicity and visual punch. It’s this personal touch that makes his work resonate with readers even as the challenges of creating the perfect joke continue to evolve.
